Technician

Entry-level license focused on VHF/UHF with limited HF segments.

Privileges
  • Operate on all amateur frequencies above 30 MHz (repeaters, simplex, satellites, digital voice).
  • HF access: CW on 80/40/15 meters plus phone/data on a slice of 10 meters.
  • Full access to APRS, EchoLink, WIRES-X, and local service nets.
Recommended Next Steps
  • Check into local nets weekly to build confidence and meet mentors.
  • Begin studying for General within six months so you retain exam muscle memory.

General

Unlocks most HF bands for regional and worldwide communication.

Privileges
  • Phone, CW, and digital privileges on 160–10 meters (except Extra-only slices).
  • Participate in POTA, Field Day, HF traffic nets, and disaster deployments.
  • Eligible for reciprocal operating agreements in many countries.

  • Upgrade your station with an HF transceiver, resonant antenna, and quality power supply.
  • Explore Winlink, FT8/FT4, and voice contesting to sharpen operating discipline.

Amateur Extra

Full privileges on every amateur band plus eligibility to serve as a Volunteer Examiner.

Privileges
  • Access to coveted DX windows and narrow CW/data segments.
  • Qualify to administer all exam elements once accredited by a VEC.
  • Preferred for MARS/SHARES participation and advanced leadership roles.
Recommended Next Steps
  • Deepen your understanding of filters, SDR theory, digital networking, and regulations.
  • Mentor new operators and help administer VE sessions or training classes.
