Practice nets on calendar

Congratulations on passing your exam! The steps below keep your momentum going and ensure you always know the next skill to learn.

Treat this as a living checklist—capture notes, celebrate milestones, and let us know where you get stuck so we can update the guide for the next operator.

Weeks 0-4 • Listen & Learn

Ease into the hobby before pressing PTT.

  • Verify your call sign in the FCC ULS and create a QRZ profile with a short introduction.
  • Program the OBARC repeaters plus local simplex channels using CHIRP or RT Systems. Save a backup file.
  • Monitor at least three consecutive nets to understand call-up format, logging cadence, and net control etiquette.
  • Attend a club meeting or virtual orientation so faces and voices start to match.

Weeks 5-8 • First Contacts

Start transmitting with intention.

  • Check into the Tuesday Information Net and Thursday training net. Use full phonetics and share one learning goal.
  • Log every QSO—even local ones. Include signal reports, topic discussed, and any follow-up questions.
  • Experiment with EchoLink or WIRES-X so you understand how the repeater links to the wider world.
  • Schedule a 1:1 mentor (Elmer) call to review mic technique, programming tips, and operating goals.

Weeks 9-12 • Build Confidence

Do a small project and support an event.

Confidence Builders & Support

Lean on the community whenever you need help.

  • Join the OBARC Slack workspace for real-time Q&A, gear recommendations, and deployment notices.
  • Borrow a club radio or antenna before buying—hands-on time beats spec sheets.
  • Attend the monthly "show-and-tell" segment to learn how others solved common shack challenges.
  • Share what you learned with the next new member; teaching cements your own knowledge.
