Licensing FAQs

HAM Licensing Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from new operators and returning hobbyists.

Getting Started

Most members finish the Technician exam with 3–4 weeks of consistent study (30–45 minutes per day). Already comfortable with electronics? You can accelerate, but we still recommend multiple practice exams to expose weak topics.

ARRL exam fee: $15, payable to the Volunteer Examiner (VE) team. FCC application fee: $35 for new Technician licenses, paid online within 10 days of passing. Study materials range from free online courses to $35–$50 printed guides.

No. Morse (CW) is optional. The written exams focus on regulations, operating practice, safety, and basic electronics. Many members still enjoy CW after licensing and we have resources ready when you want to learn it.

Testing Logistics

We host in-person sessions every month. If travel is difficult, we will help you register for accredited remote exams through ARRL, W5YI, or GLAARG VEC teams.

Yes. If you pass one element, you may attempt the next element immediately for no additional VE fee as long as time permits. Bring study material if you hope to attempt General right after Technician.

VEs can provide large-print exams, extra lighting, or additional time for documented needs. Contact testing@w5obm.com at least two weeks prior so we can prepare.

After You Pass

You will receive an email from the VEC or FCC confirming submission. Once processed, your call sign appears in the ULS database. Bookmark uls.fcc.gov and search using your FRN or name.

The FCC does not collect the $35 fee for upgrades—it only applies to new licenses, vanity applications, and renewals. You will still pay the $15 VE fee for each test session.

Program local repeaters, check into the OBARC nets, update QRZ.com with your basic info, and start planning for the General exam while the material is fresh.
