What to Expect on Exam Day

Know the flow, reduce anxiety, and enjoy the moment you become an amateur radio operator.

2 Weeks Out

Finalize Logistics

  • Confirm the exam date, location, and start time with the VE team.
  • Request accommodations (large-print exam, seating, lighting) at least 14 days prior.
  • Take a full-length practice test without notes to simulate exam conditions.
1 Week Out

Tune Up Your Knowledge

  • Review missed questions, especially regulations and safety topics that often trip up candidates.
  • If you plan to attempt multiple elements, skim the next question pool so nothing is a surprise.
  • Verify travel plans and share them with anyone carpooling to the exam site.
48 Hours Out

Paperwork & Supplies

  • Print your FRN confirmation and any Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) documents.
  • Gather IDs, calculator, pencils, and payment. Pack them into a clear pouch so the check-in table can inspect quickly.
  • Remote exam? Test your webcam, microphone, lighting, and backup power/network.
Exam Day

Arrive Early & Breathe

  • Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete paperwork. Phones must be powered off once you enter the room.
  • VE teams will explain rules, seat assignments, and how to request assistance. Ask questions before the exam begins.
  • If you finish early, raise your hand. You may attempt the next element if time allows.
After the Exam

Results & FCC Follow-Up

  • VEs grade on site. If you pass, you will sign the CSCE and receive next-step instructions.
  • The FCC application is usually submitted the same day. Watch email for the payment notice (new Technician) or confirmation (General/Extra).
  • Celebrate, then make your first on-air contact within 48 hours to lock in the knowledge!
