Connect to W5OBM repeaters from anywhere, stay compliant with FCC rules, and keep audio quality high.

EchoLink extends repeater coverage to laptops and smartphones while still honoring the controloperator requirements of Part 97. Use it for travel check-ins, training nets, or to monitor the local repeater when you cannot reach it via RF.

Follow these steps to verify your call sign, connect responsibly, and report problems quickly if the node misbehaves.

Account Verification Basics

Only licensed operators with verified call signs may transmit on EchoLink.

  • Create a free EchoLink account using your FCC-registered call sign exactly as issued.
  • Upload a PDF or photo of your license, or let the system validate you automatically via the FCC ULS database.
  • Wait for the confirmation email before attempting to connect—most approvals complete within a business day.
  • Keep your contact email current; control operators rely on it for urgent notices.

Connecting from Apps or RF

Two common paths: native EchoLink apps or RF nodes sending DTMF touch tones.

  • Desktop & Mobile Clients
Search for "W5OBM-R" or filter by ZIP code 38654. Tap to connect, wait for the courtesy tone, then make your call.
  • RF Linking
From the repeater, key up, pause two seconds, send the 6-digit node number, then #. Use * to disconnect.
  • Remote Links & Conferences
Announce which system you plan to join (ex: *Linking to WX4NHC*) so local stations know what to expect.

Audio & Operating Discipline

The internet path reveals every flaw in your audio chain.

  • Use wired headsets or quality microphones; disable operating-system enhancements that add echo or AGC pumping.
  • Pause before speaking so the link has time to key the repeater and linked nodes.
  • Identify when you connect, every 10 minutes, and when you disconnect. Mention both your call sign and the system you linked.
  • Avoid long monologues—linked systems often include dozens of repeaters waiting for a turn.

Security & Troubleshooting

Keep the node healthy by reporting issues quickly.

  • Only run the official EchoLink client or vetted apps; do not share your login with friends or family.
  • If you hear stuck carriers, one-way audio, or excessive delay, note the UTC time, room name, and what triggered it.
  • Email systems@w5obm.com for urgent issues. Include screenshots or sound clips if possible.
  • Unlink when you finish. The courtesy tone or voice prompt confirms the node is idle again.

Report Audio Issues

Help us maintain clean links. Share the time, node numbers involved, and whether you were on RF or an app.
